LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) is a technologically advanced wood based material offering improved high structural strength over normal timber products .

The complex development process delivers a homogenous timber based material with unique performance characteristics.

LVL products significantly exceed the performance of solid wood and other high-grade timber solutions.

Södra - Wood For Inside & Out

LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber)

The main material used tin the production of LVL is wood veneer of varing grades (wood mixtures differ from supplier to supplier). The term LVL was coined in the 1960s by USA based Wayerhauser developers of Laminated Veneer Lumber.

LVL is now considered to be the best performing wood product in terms of reliability and durability.

Its performance characteristics puts LVL at the top of the most advanced and technological timber products available to the Building and Construction Industry.

LVL offers unique strength characteristics over wood products, eg., its Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) is 24% higher than that of solid spruce. Its Bending Strength (MOR)  is double that of spruce.

LVL’s physical characteristics guarantee high bearing capacity of its products at smaller cross-sections which in turn greatly reduces the total volume of required timber.

These characteristics are associated with many features of LVL production processes that ensure none of natural wood’s normal defects in the structural integrity of the product.

LVL is capable of maintaining precise tolerances despite extreme seasonal and climate factors. LVL will neither warp, rot or buckle when subjected to humidity, it offers minimum shrinkage and absorbs virtually no moisture.

The dead weight of an LVL beam remains unchanged in humid environment.

LVL boasts far better Fire Resistance than ordinary timber beams. This is achieved due to less porosity of the material and multiple layers of veneer. Phenol-formaldehyde resin also does not support ignition. LVL’s high density and solid nature prevents fire propagation and thermal effects inside the material.

LVL tests demonstrate its ability to maintain its properties within 30 to 60 minutes at 300°C. Under these test conditions, the beam undergoes slow charring at the rate of 0.6 mm per minute flatwise and 1 mm per minute edgewise.

LVL significantly improves construction times  by avoiding welding and the use of lighter lifting machinery on-site.

As you may expect, the price of LVL is a little bit higher than other construction materials.  However, LVL products out perform other products which often justifies additional costs. As opposed to common construction materials such as metal and reinforced concrete.
